A Note to Your January Self

Closing this year gently and starting next year resourced đź’›

(This article was originally posted on The Voice Nook on Substack.)

There is only 4% of 2025 remaining and I confess:

I’m tired.

I’m so, so ready to close my laptop and swan dive into my favorite blanket with an endless stream of documentaries.

And I’ll get there. We’re aaaalmost at the finish line.

To be honest, I’m not trying to finish the year strong, per se.

It’s more important to me that I close out this year and set up for next year with intention.

That’s really all.

On one hand, it would be so easy to bail out right now. 🪂

It would feel sooooo good to say “let’s circle back in the new year” to every single person, email, or request.

On the other hand, if I do that, not only will my January self be so freaking pissed and feel like she’s already running behind, but my 2025 self will feel pretty let down, too.

This year—the year of Possible—has been a year of remaining committed to myself, my intentions, and my goals, each day.

I have a lovely period of rest already on my calendar. I scheduled it very intentionally and I will guard each day of it with intention, too.

Before I get there, in order to get the most out of that rest, and arrive into 2026 refreshed and resourced, I need to handle a few remaining items.

Some questions that are helping me wrap 2025 and approach 2026 with intention are:

  • What unfinished projects or unresolved details need to be shepherded to completion? What remains to be said or done? What loops need to be closed?
  • What will stress me out over the holiday break if I leave it unresolved? What will it take to get it resolved? How will resolving it impact my ability to fully rest over the break?
  • What am I resisting taking care of right now, but my January self will be so grateful that I just did the damn thing now?
  • Is there anything I think needs to be resolved, but I can actually just let go of or put down?
  • How do I want to feel on Monday, January 5th?
  • What tools, resources, or support do I need to feel that way?

If these questions feel a little heavy right now, I totally get it. They feel kinda heavy to me, too.

But heavy doesn’t mean collapse.

I know my downtime is coming, and I have the tools and support to hold myself through this last 4%.

If you read those questions and thought, “Damn, these are good questions…but I don’t want to work through this alone — and I also don’t want to do it right now during the busiest month of the year, with the shortest and coldest days,” I get that, too. You’re absolutely not alone.

Sometimes the most compassionate — and intentional — thing we can do is give ourselves a whole lot of grace for what we’ve got (or don’t got) to give in this moment, while ever so gently turning one eye toward the support we need to create the change we’re seeking going forward.

I sit with this idea a lot—both when I’m working with my clients and when I’m working with my own coaches.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been wondering about how I could offer support for those who crave it right now, in a way that feels grounded and sustainable, while also feeling spacious enough to coexist alongside the holidays and the end-of-year transition.

Here’s what I’ve come up with:
